Do You Want to know More About The History Of The Watch?
The history of the watch can be traced back as far as the earliest inhabitants of the earth lived. Today, it is considered as one of the most useful accessory. It keeps you in track of time, and it tells when to do or to stop what you are doing. Below is a summary of how watches evolved in years.
People of the prehistoric ages do not have any handheld widgets that can help them determine the time of the day. But instead, they rely on the device, called a sundial that casted a shadow when the sun struck it. It is considered as one of the oldest scientific instruments in the world, utilized by ancient people of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Babylon.

But a new time-telling device was conceptualized. It all started in 1485 when Leonardo da Vinci sketched a clock’s fuse. This genius never thought that what he did with his pencil will become a valuable tool nowadays. Although he knew about precise measurements and how to operate gadgets of different sizes, he never materialized his ideas so well.
In the year 1500, the first pocket watch was invented, and the pioneer for this was Peter Heinlein, a German national, who devoted much of his effort in creating devices that can help tell time. It wasn’t clear if he got the exact ideas from da Vinci or not. But it is pretty sure that he was one of his inspirations.
After Heinlein, other inventors upgraded the first watch. There are some who added sounds and alarms, like Daniel Quare who added bells, which rang every hour. Others tried to use other materials to polish it, like Nicolas Facio, who embellished it with rubies. While others invented buttons and levers that will make the watch a lot easier to use, such as Thomas Mudge, who invented the lever escapement in 1760; Abraham Louis Breguet, who invented the self winding movement in 1780; and Thomas Young who added a recording chronograph in 1807.
Moreover, various watch stores and watch repair outlets opened in Europe and in the United States. Some of the notable ones were the Breguet’s shop in Paris on 1775, the Luther Goddard shop in Massachusetts, USA on 1809, the Omega Watch Company on 1848, the Rolex Watch Company on 1905, and the Swatch Brand on 1983.
The history of the watch will remind everyone that this little gadget indeed came a long way.
